Today Jesmond Dene remains one of the few areas of natural beauty within a one mile radius of the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne. The Dene is a unique resource that has been appreciated by many visitors for more than one hundred years. It was in 1883 that Victorian industrialist Lord Armstrong presented the City of Newcastle upon Tyne with the gift of Jesmond Dene. Lord Armstrong gave the Dene to the City on the understanding that it should be remain as a public park; maintained as an oasis of natural beauty within an urban setting.
